Workshop overview

Always Was, Always Will Be… Aboriginal Land

2020’s NAIDOC theme echoes the important call for Land Rights, and also evokes decades of communities striving for civil rights, human rights and self determination. We unpack the national and global calls for change, recognising cultural knowledge for all as essential to a shared future.

Always Was, Always Will Be has a profound meaning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people all over Australia. In 2020, Always Was, Always Will Be requires a broader and deeper understanding of the true history of Australia, and we begin by acknowledging over 65,000 years of cultural and spiritual connection to Country.

Continuously occupied and cared for by thousands of generations, sovereignty was never ceded by our First Nations peoples. Through the underpinning principles of Land and Lore, we connect the way our Elders traversed, lived and worked across this continent to contemporary concerns for Country.

From the first footprints to the first languages, Australia has the oldest stories, ceremonies, art and technologies. Always Was, Always Will Be connects this history with current learning ideas and curriculum priorities.
